Description
Yunnan Black Classical – the golden face of black tea from China
Yunnan Black Classical (also known as Dian Hong, "Yunnan red tea") is one of the most famous and highly valued black teas. It is the pride of the Chinese province of Yunnan, a region considered the cradle of tea, where tea bushes have been cultivated for over 3,000 years. This place, with its fertile, red soils, mild climate and high humidity, is famous for its unique conditions that give the tea its unique character. Grown at altitudes of 1,680–1,900 m above sea level, it often comes from wild bushes (ye sheng) or old tea trees (gu shu) – the oldest of them are even over 1000 years old, being a symbol of tradition and quality.
Tea is made from leaves Camellia sinensis var. assamica or its hybrids, such as Yun Kang #10 or Chang Ye Bai Hao. The full oxidation process gives it a characteristic, rich flavor, and the presence of golden buds enhances the taste and visual qualities. Teas from wild or old trees (gu shu) are particularly valued for their complexity and aging potential, which allows them to develop new, fruity and winey notes. Aging, made possible by the rich composition of leaves from ancient trees, allows the tea to evolve—from honeyed to more fruity, smooth, and winey, like a mature wine.
Dian Hong production began relatively recently, in the 1930s, in Fengqing, as a response to the growing demand for black teas on international markets. Previously, Yunnan was primarily known for its Pu-erh teas, but innovative leaf processing methods allowed for the creation of a black tea with a unique character: velvety, malty, and deep in flavor, with characteristic golden buds (so-called "golden tips"), which quickly became associated with the highest quality.
Interestingly, for a long time, the tea was primarily exported – its subtle sweetness and rich aroma gained immense popularity in Europe and the United States, becoming one of the most recognizable tea products from China. In China itself, it was considered a luxury item for years, often given as a gift or served at important gatherings. Today, Yunnan Black Classical is a classic among black teas – a symbol of elegance and tradition, and an example of tea craftsmanship that harmoniously combines a rich heritage with a modern pursuit of quality and flavor.
Taste and aroma
The infusion has an intense color—from golden amber to ruby-copper, depending on steeping time. It boasts a velvety, full-bodied flavor devoid of bitterness. A pleasant, malty note, often described as malty, dominates, intertwined with accents of caramel, honey, and dark chocolate. Some also detect a subtle spiciness and delicate fruity nuances, making this tea incredibly complex. The aroma is deep, sweet, and elegant—a warmth that perfectly warms and soothes the senses.
Properties
Yunnan Black Classical, like other black teas, contains natural antioxidants that support the body's defenses against free radicals. Thanks to the presence of polyphenols and theaflavins, it can support circulatory function, improve concentration, and boost energy. Regular consumption of this tea can positively impact metabolism, support digestive processes, and improve well-being.
For whom?
Yunnan Black Classical tea was created for those who value balanced flavor, elegance, and tradition. It will appeal to both connoisseurs seeking subtle nuances and those just discovering high-quality teas. It's an excellent choice for those who prefer infusions with a full flavor without excessive bitterness. It's perfect as a morning tea, energizing and uplifting, but also as an afternoon drink to accompany moments of relaxation.
How to brew Yunnan Black Classical tea?
The best way to prepare the tea is to steep approximately 3–4 grams of leaves in water at 95–100°C. Brewing time should be 3 to 5 minutes, depending on your preferred flavor intensity. A shorter brew produces a more delicate and sweet infusion, while a longer brew produces a more pronounced and intense one. The tea can be brewed multiple times, with each subsequent brew revealing new layers of flavor and aroma.
Why is it worth having it on offer?
Yunnan Black Classical is a classic that will enhance any black tea offering. It combines the prestige of Chinese tradition with a universal flavor that will appeal to a wide audience. Its velvety texture and harmonious character make it ideal for both retail and hospitality – serving it in cafés, restaurants, and hotels.
