Traditionally dried over pinewood, it captivates with its distinctive character – an initial smoky sharpness gradually gives way to a delicate, resinous sweetness. This is an infusion that leaves no one indifferent – some will love it from the first sip, others need a moment to fully appreciate its uniqueness. In vegan cuisine, it works perfectly as a natural way to impart a smoky aroma to dishes, and in our store, it is a unique proposition for those seeking unique, expressive flavors.

Description

Lapsang Souchong – black tea with the flavor of a campfire and resinous sweetness

Lapsang Souchong is considered one of the most recognizable, yet also one of the most controversial black teas. Its flavor and aroma evoke extreme emotions – some fall in love with it at first sip, while others are unconvinced. Although Lapsang Souchong has a reputation as a tea "for the brave," it actually harbors a subtlety and complexity that can be discerned upon careful tasting. This tea perfectly blends the tradition of tea craftsmanship with the unique style of southern China.

Its homeland is the mountainous regions of China's Fujian province, and its birthplace is believed to be the village of Tongmuguan in the Wuyi Mountains. Legend has it that it was there, in the 16th century, that the custom of drying tea leaves over pine fires originated. One story has it that during wartime, tea producers were forced to abandon their tea while troops marched. When they returned a day later to salvage the leaves, they quickly dried them over pine branch smoke. The result was surprising – the tea acquired an intense, smoky aroma, which was met with acclaim. Another version claims that the smoke was a form of preservation before the long sea voyage to Europe. Although neither legend is supported by historical sources, both perfectly capture the air of mystery surrounding the origins of Lapsang.

Interestingly, Lapsang Souchong may have been one of the first black (or "red" in Chinese nomenclature) teas in history. Today, traditionally smoked versions, particularly those from Tongmuguan, are becoming increasingly rare and command high prices. Modern Lapsangs often acquire their distinctive aroma using natural smoke flavorings, making them more readily available.

Taste and aroma

Lapsang Souchong's most distinctive characteristic is its intense, smoky aroma, reminiscent of a campfire, smoked plum, or pinewood. It's this scent that makes the tea recognizable even with your eyes closed. While the initial experience can be overwhelming, its depth and balance quickly become apparent: smoky notes blend harmoniously with the natural sweetness of black tea.

The flavor is expressive, full-bodied, and lingers long on the palate, gradually evolving into a subtle, resinous sweetness. Notes of caramel and delicate chocolate can be detected in the background. This transformation makes Lapsang Souchong a complex and multi-dimensional tea. Moreover, it lends itself to repeated brewing – with each subsequent cup, it reveals a softer side, with more velvety, and even fruity notes.

Properties

Lapsang Souchong, like other black teas, contains theine, which has a stimulating effect and improves concentration. Its smoky aroma makes many tea lovers consider it a warming beverage, especially on colder days. The tea supports digestive processes, improves mood, and boosts energy. Thanks to its antioxidants, it helps protect the body from free radicals; it can also alleviate feelings of fatigue and weariness, replacing your morning coffee. Although Lapsang's flavor profile differs significantly from classic black teas, its health benefits remain equally valuable.

For whom?

Lapsang Souchong tea is designed for those seeking new experiences and unafraid of unusual flavors. It will appeal to both experienced connoisseurs who want to add something original to their collection and beginners looking for something that stands out from the crowd. Its distinctive character also makes it a great complement to vegan cuisine; it's used to impart a smoky aroma to dishes, replacing the taste of smoked meat. It works well in marinades, sauces, and even cocktails, giving it a truly wide culinary potential.

How to brew Lapsang Souchong tea?

It's best to steep Lapsang Souchong tea leaves in water at around 95°C, using 2–3g of leaves for every 200ml of water. The brewing time is typically 2–3 minutes, which produces an intense, smoky, yet harmonious infusion. Those new to this tea can reduce the brewing time to 1.5–2 minutes to gradually acclimate to its distinctive character.

The tea is also excellent for the gongfu cha method, which involves short, repeated brewing in a gaiwan or small teapot. Lapsang Souchong can also be used as a base for broths, sauces, and marinades, particularly in vegan and vegetarian cuisine, where it replaces the flavor of smoked meats. It also works well in creating unusual drinks, such as tea-alcohol cocktails.

Why is it worth having it on offer?

Lapsang Souchong stands out from other teas, perfectly complementing the offerings. Its unique, smoky flavor makes it easily recognizable and a popular choice for those seeking something unique. It's also an excellent product for educating customers – a tea that evokes emotions and encourages conversation about tea culture. Having it in the offer is a sign that the store isn't afraid to offer customers bold and unconventional solutions.
