Description

Hai Bei – a flower hidden in a tea shell

At first glance, Hai Bei tea looks like an inconspicuous ball of tea leaves. However, pour hot water over it and it transforms into a flower enclosed in a tea "shell." This is where its name comes from – Hai Bei means "sea shell" in Chinese and emphasizes the idea of a hidden interior: just like a seashell, true beauty emerges only after it is opened. Nature was the inspiration for these compositions. The blossoming flower in water symbolizes the cycle of life, rebirth, and the beauty of harmony. In China, blooming teas are sometimes part of meditation or the gongfu cha ceremony – their purpose is to capture attention and calm the senses.

Flowering teas, including Hai Bei, have a much longer tradition than one might think. Their origins date back to the Song Dynasty (960–1279), when they were prepared for the imperial court as a culinary art form. In the 1980s, the art of creating flowering teas was "reinvented" through modern blending techniques, leading to the development of new styles and an increase in their global popularity. The modern version of Hai Bei represents a renewal of this tradition, combining the craftsmanship of hand-binding with modern design and aesthetic expectations.

Hai Bei is a rare and luxurious tea – it requires immense precision and many hours of work by the artisan, who binds leaf by leaf around the floral center. This makes it not only a beverage but also a work of art, to be admired as much as it is consumed. Handcrafted work is crucial here. The most delicate leaves from the early spring harvest are used to prepare a single ball, then bound around dried flowers (most often marigold, gomphrena, or jasmine). Each batch has its own unique composition – sometimes the golden center of marigold petals dominates, other times the pink-purple gomphrena takes center stage, resembling a spherical flower when opened. Such compositions are created primarily in factories in southern China, where experienced artisans combine precision binding with the selection of raw materials. The effect is not only intended to please the palate: in Chinese culture, blooming is associated with prosperity, a fresh start, and the harmonious rhythm of nature – which is why blooming teas are often served on important occasions or given as gifts.

Taste and aroma

Hai Bei's infusion has a light, straw-gold color and a velvety, light texture. The flavor reveals a slightly sweet note of young white tea leaves, complemented by the warmth of marigold, the delicacy of jasmine, or the fresh, herbal note of gomphrena (depending on the plants used in a given batch). The overall effect creates a harmonious bouquet, devoid of harsh bitterness, and the aftertaste develops softly and long, delicately transitioning into notes of honey and herbs. The aroma of the dried herb and the infusion itself lingers in floral tones, reminiscent of the freshness of a spring garden. The tea not only soothes with its taste but also provides a unique aesthetic experience, bringing peace and harmony to every sip.

Properties

Young white tea leaves provide polyphenols and antioxidants, which support the body's natural defenses and help neutralize free radicals. A moderate amount of caffeine promotes concentration without causing overstimulation. Calendula is valued for its anti-inflammatory and digestive benefits. The brewing ritual itself is also important – observing the developing composition has a calming effect and helps temporarily forget about everyday problems. Note: People allergic to plants in the Asteraceae family (e.g., calendula) should exercise caution. Consult a doctor if pregnant, breastfeeding, or serving the infusion to children.

For whom?

Hai Bei is the perfect choice for those who value aesthetics as much as taste and seek more from tea than just the infusion itself. It delivers a "wow" factor in restaurants and cafes, becoming an attraction in itself. It also makes a unique gift – unique, yet versatile, perfect for a variety of occasions. Hai Bei's delicate, harmonious character makes it a popular choice for lovers of subtle and smooth infusions.

How to brew Hai Bei tea?

The fullest visual effect is achieved by brewing in a transparent pot, where you can watch the tea bloom. A Hai Bei ball is placed in water at 85–90°C and left for 3–4 minutes, until the tea has fully developed. The tea can be brewed up to 3–5 times, with each subsequent brew revealing different flavor accents. Subsequent brews typically shorten the water contact time or slightly lower the temperature, preserving the clarity and harmony of the flavor.

Why is it worth having it on offer?

Hai Bei is a tea that attracts attention in itself – it becomes a story and a visual spectacle even as it brews. It's perfect for impressive presentation in restaurants, works well as a gift, and allows you to distinguish your brand in a simple yet unique way. Each tea ball is a ready-made "little spectacle" that guests eagerly photograph and remember, making tea not just a drink but an experience.
