Red tea – a brew with character and history

Pu-erh is one of the most distinctive and intriguing teas in the world. In Europe, it is known as red tea, in China classified as black tea (There, the tea names refer to the color of the leaves, not the infusion.) This doesn't change the fact that we're dealing with an infusion with a unique character: deep, earthy, and sometimes slightly smoky. For many, it's a surprising yet memorable flavor. For others, it's a daily ally of a healthy lifestyle. The uniqueness of red tea comes from the combination of fermentation and long, slow maturation., which gives the infusion a deep, earthy aroma and complex character. Over time, two main varieties of this tea have emerged: raw (Sheng), which matures naturally over years, and mature (Shu), produced through an accelerated fermentation process. Both are the result of centuries of tradition and refined storage methods.

“The quality of tea is a decision made by your mouth.”
– Lu Yu, Chinese writer and poet

Historical outline

Pu-erh tea originates from the Yunnan province in southern China, and its history dates back over 1,700 yearsThis region, thanks to its mild climate and fertile soil, has been considered an ideal location for tea cultivation for centuries. The name "Pu-erh" comes from the city of Pu'er, which, as early as the Tang Dynasty (7th-10th centuries), was an important center of the tea trade and a gateway to other parts of China, Tibet, and Southeast Asia. Historically, it was particularly prized in the courts of Chinese emperors; pressed blocks of tea were often used as payment or gifts for the emperor and high-ranking officials. Over the centuries, Pu-erh has earned the status of a noble and unique tea, both in terms of flavor and cultural heritage.

Health properties

Pu-erh has been attracting interest for years not only because of its taste, but also because of its effects. It supports digestion, accelerates metabolism, and regulates cholesterol and blood glucose levels. It's not without reason that it's been nicknamed the "fat killer"—when combined with a low-calorie diet, it helps maintain a healthy body weight. It contains theine, which provides a gentle stimulating effect without causing sudden energy spikes. It supports body detoxification, neutralizes free radicals, and protects against cell aging. It protects against the development of many chronic and dangerous diseases, including cancer. Furthermore, it reduces stress, protects the nervous system, and has a calming effect; it also influences the production of melatonin, which helps regulate sleep.

It's worth knowing

The most valuable red teas are made from leaves that have been matured for up to a dozen years. Traditionally, they were pressed into "bricks" or "cakes"—not only for ease of transport but also for cultural and symbolic reasons. Today, some of these teas command prices comparable to the rarest collector's wines. Interestingly, to this day, some Chinese people keep pressed Pu-erh teas in their homes like family treasures – in special chests where they mature for decades like noble alcohols.

How to brew red tea?

Pu-erh is best brewed in water at a temperature of approximately 95°C. Brewing time depends on the desired form and intensity (usually 2 to 5 minutes). A shorter brew produces a milder infusion, while a longer brew brings out the full earthy character. The tea can be brewed several times – each subsequent brew reveals different notes without losing its depth.
